Sony presented the added reality technology for video games

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

I guess this information can be really interesting for each software development company. Sonny has announced and presented the Smart AR system that allows virtual objects and images to become parts of the surrounding reality. It is suitable for smartphones and portable gaming consoles.

In contrast to many other similar systems, Smart AR doesn’t apply the GPS navigation and special markers for defining where to place the virtual object in the real world and how it should be moved. Instead of this the object recognition technique is used. gamsonypinkbear530

At first, Smart AR identifies the object from the computer game or application considering its outlines. The system also tracks its movements and orientation in the virtual reality. At the same time, the approximate 3D map of the room is built based on the differences in snapshots which are taken at various angles during the movement of the mobile device camera.

As a result, the 3D model of the computer character can walk on the table in the user’s room in response to his commands and actions. Of course, to see this, you have to look at the table via the screen of the portable console or a smartphone.

This new technology can guarantee that software developers for iPhone will apply it for creating various cutting edge apps for smartphone and not only.

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

The tool for jailbreaking the smartphones on the platform Windows Phone 7 appeared on the net, reported the techblog IThinkDifferent. Using the program ChevronWP7, users will be able to crack their smartphones and install third-party applications on them. At present Windows applications can be downloaded only from the official store Marketplace. So far, the number of applications in the Marketplace is about 3,000. Windows application developers are not very happy with this news as now they have to think how to protect their apps.

chevron_wp7The mobile platform Microsoft which followed Windows Mobile 6.5 was introduced in October 2010. At present only nine models of smartphones based on this operating system have been introduced on the market. They are sold in 30 countries of the world including Europe and North America. Mobile application development companies have already working hard creating apps for Windows and other mobile platforms.

The models based on WP7 were launched by NTC, LG, Samsung, and Dell. In Russia Windows Phone 7 smartphones are expected to be on sale only in spring 2011.

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

In August the share of Android mobile platform reached a quarter of all US mobile traffic, as stated in the blog of the analytical company Quantcast.

At the same time the Apple platform is still the leader of the mobile traffic in the USA. As a result, most mobile application developers create their applications especially for this platform. 56% of the general volume of data transmitted via mobile Internet belongs to Apple. Android occupies the second place and BlackBerry smartphones are on the third place with 9%.

It should be noted that in the second quarter of 2010 Android overcame Apple iOS and BlackBerry became the best selling platform for smartphones in the USA. In April – June about 5 mln smartphones based on Google OS were sold in the USA, which has exceeded the figures from Canadian RIM and Apple. However, the leader of the smartphone market by the general number of mobile devices is still the Finnish Nokia.

Analytics: Android will overcome iPhone by popularity in 2012

Monday, August 16th, 2010

In 2012 Android will become more popular than iPhone. The main reasons for this are its attractiveness among other manufacturers and the modeliphone vs android of distribution.

According to the analytics from iSuppli, the number of Android smartphones will exceed the number of Apple smartphones by 2012. iSuppi predicts that by the end of the year 2012 the market share of Android will be 19.4% on the world’s market of smartphones in comparison with 2.7% in 2009. The market share of iOS from Apple will increase from 13.8% to 15.9% for the same period. By 2014 the Android sjare market will increase to 22.8% and the iOS share will reduce to 15.3%.

The future domination of Android is due to the different model of the platform distribution. iOS is a proprietary solution unavailable for third party producers. Android is an open OS available for everybody. By now it has been supported by NTS, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Acer, Samsung, LG and other companies while iPhones are produced only by Apple.

By 2014 the high quality content and mobile application will bring more than $100 bln. It’s a very promising and profitable market not only for smartphone producers but also for mobile apps developers who create apps for Android.

The year 2010 will be the year of Android

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Not so long ago smartphones and communicators were niche products that simple users didn’t even pay attention to. But the operating systems has been developing and at present such phones offer a wide range of options for business–users as well as for usual users who prefer exchange SMS or visit social networks.

According to the research company In-Stat, the competition in the OS market is shifting from software basic capabilities to functionality and ‘user’s experience’ which the phone can provide.  Smartphones and communicators will develop not only at the programming level but also at the hardware level – sensor screens with high resolution, high-quality cameras, communication tools.

In-Stat supposes that the next year will pass under the Android sign. According to the research statistics, in 2014 more than 400 mln smartphones will be sold in the world and more than 300 mln of them will have a built-in MACEK accelerometer. Today about 52% of the device production costs go to a touch screen, a processor, software, license fees and communication modules (2G, 3G).

The present leader in the market of smartphone platforms Symbian will lose its position taking the pressure from the side of Maemoplatforms, Android apps, BlackBerry application developmetn and iPhone mobile development.

Mobile apps with the maximum of functionality – new approach to mobile software development

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Modern interfaces designed for mobile phones lacks integrity. Specialists form the EleganceIT company decided to reconsider existing approach to mobile soft development and invented some new features. They just took a sheet of paper and drew a table, including all the most popular mobile functions in horizontal and vertical lines, one by one. So cell at their intersections showed the possible way of integration:

1. Calendar + Phonebook = birthday reminder

2. Photo + Phonebook = to mark in the photo your friends from phonebook

3. Calendar + Photos = sort photos according to dates and events from your calendar

4. Photo + GPS = locate photos, taken by phone user

5. GPS + Phonebook = to mark addresses (home, work, etc.) assigned to people from your phonebook

6. SMS + Phonebook = to show SMS messages as a chat with particular contact (as it was done in Gmail)

7. GPS + Call log = to show where the call took a place (It is doubtful, but it may be helpful for those who need an alibi :) )

8. Notes + Phonebook = mobile CRM, to leave any notes about people from your phonebook (their wishes, debt, etc.)

9. Contact + Alarms = call reminder, appointment reminder, etc.

10. Alarms + GPS = to call back to particular person when the phone is at an appointed place

11. Internet + Phonebook = friendfeeds, rss from their web pages

12. Internet + Music = something like last.fm

13. Bluetooth + Phonebook = associate contact and bluetooth address, keep a transmissions history (or even better keep one chat with sms, call logs, rss, etc.)

14. SMS + GPS = send SMS on arrival an appointed place (Mom: Son, send me sms on arrival – it will be so easy then :) )

EleganceIT believe that users definitely appreciate such features, so mobile development companies should work in this direction.

7 wishful functions for perfect iPhones and smartphones

Monday, October 5th, 2009

We continue reviewing of the list of functions for ideal iPhones and smartphones (new desired features and ideas for mobile application developers):eye-phone

Wish # 3: To use smartphone as a USB hub to transfer multimedia information. For example, to save pictures from your camera or flash drives and also to use it as a media server while you connected to the Wi-Fi Internet (this possibility has been already implemented in some devices).

Wish # 4: To connect smartphone to TV to playback HD video.

Wish # 5: Again, books insonation. We must admit that it’s much easier to listen to the text than to read it.

Wish # 6 (it was demonstrated in popular concepts): A projected on any surface full-sized keyboard.

Wish # 7: А projector for presentations or just for surfing on a big screen.

Wish # 8: Large amounts of memory. We know that some iPhones have 32 Gb, and Apple is going to produce 60 Gb models… But we also know how much memory needed for some maniacs …. at least 120-160 Gb!

Wish # 9: Wireless connection to home audio system to use smartphone as a media source.

Wish # 10 (it’s the sheer audacity, but we may dream): We believe that some day smartphone makers and developers will add DECT support in their devices. We mean intelligent forwarding of calls (mobile via the mobile network, city calls through the city network and so on). Nowadays Google Voice has similar option.

What do you want to see in your ideal smartphone?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

iphone_jokeMany of us are Smartphone owners, some use Windows Mobile, others prefer such OS as iPhone or Android. But we all need different additional applications to personalize our high-tech “friend”. Mobile application developers released thousands of programs for smartphones, but users always want more.

So let’s review the list of functions, which you may wish to add in your future ideal smartphone, so called “can do anything” device. Of course we will be realistic and will not add such functions as “to make coffee”. :)

Wish # 1: RSS reader, Twitter client, mail client with voice synthesizer and voice control. Such functions will be very useful on the way to work. For example, you can read news headlines, and then give a voice command to read the full version. Many users say that existing applications for voice control are far from the ideal, so there is a lot of work for mobile programs developers.

Wish # 2: Built-in FM transmitter. Many of us save a lot of music files on our smarts (iPhones), and it would be nice to listen to it in a car (a car radio) without awkward adapters and cables. Of course, we must admit that such features somehow have been already implemented on the basis of Bluetooth.

To be continued…
