Manual For Beginners in iOS Development

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Apple has published the manual for beginner software developers for iPhone platform. Most popular gadgets iPhone, iPad and iPod work on this platform as the Apple Insider informs.

The manual, available on the official site of the company, provides the main tools for mobile developers, the operating principles of iOS and the online App Store. “This manual represents a starting position for iPhone application development”, – said the official representative of the company.

At first, the future developer is offered to download the set of tools Xcode and register in the iOS Developer Program. Then he can take a short training online course on creating the simplest application and get acquainted with the basics of the apps development.

In the next section, some types of applications, design, interface and the principles of the App Store operations are discussed. The online manual ends with the tips on finding further more detailed technical information and more advanced materials on iOS application development.
At present, iOS is the most popular mobile development platform. Last year Apple informed that there were more than 550,000 apps in the App Store, 170,000 were developed specially for iPad. The company gives to developers 70% of the profit from the sold apps. According to the latest data, since the launch of the App Store, the company has paid more than 4 mln dollars to third-party developers.

The main competitor of the iOS is the Android platform developed by Google. At the same time, the Android Market has two times more applications than the App Store.

In spite of gloomy forecasts of fantasts, our planet is not likely to be conquered by computers. However, the mobile platform Android is already making confident steps towards the world domination. In his speech at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 Robert Kyncl, the head of YouTube portal, said that the number of daily activations of Android devices already exceeds the number of daily newborns. Kyncl stated that if the situation will develop like that, the producers will have to start searching new clients on other planets.many-androids

Mobile devices had no problems in becoming a leader. According to the statistics, the birth rate has been going down for the last three decades while the volumes of portable device production are constantly growing. The only restraining factor for the manufacturers is the level of demand for Android smartphones.

The Apple Corporation doesn’t share the similar statistics but one can presuppose that the circulations of Android devices released in great numbers from Samsung to Motorola exceeded the official figure of 250 mln iOS activations (including iPod, iPhone and iPads).

At the same time, mobile development specialists try to keep up with these tendencies and create more and more mobile devices for all platforms.

Apple lost its main iPhone and iPod developer

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

papermasterSenior Vice-President and Head of the Devices Hardware Engineering Department of Apple, Mark Papermaster, left the company, reported the New York Times.

Mr Papermaster came to Apple from IBM in 2008. In the new place he was responsible for iPod and iPhone development.

According to some observers, the reason of Mr Papermaster’s resign was the notorious problem with the iPhone 4 antenna, which made Apple start giving away free cases for this smartphone.

The former Vice-President didn’t comment his resign. The speaker from Apple, Steve Dowling, confirmed Mark Papermaster’s resign having mentioned that his duties passed to Bob Mansfield, Senior Vice-President and Head of the Mac Hardware Engineering Department.

By the way, Mr Papermaster didn’t take part in the conference dedicated to the ‘case distribution’. Steve Jobs, Bob Mansfield and the main operation director Tim Cook carry his can.

By the way, iPhone application development is probably the most rapidly developing trend in the sphere of mobile application development at present. So any change in the management may influence it.

Autorotation for interfaces of iPad apps

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

The majority of iPhone and iPod touch applications support portrait orientation only. Many web developers haven’t even thought about adding landscape orientation where it is really necessary. Apple isn’t an exception: it didn’t realize the support of landscape orientation in the important system programs of iPhone OS 2.x (the company has corrected its mistake in iPhone OS 3.x).

With iPad arrival the situation has changed. Apple obliged all iPad apps developers to support the both types of orientation in iPad applications. Of course, there can be exceptions, for example, games. But applications that don’t have fixed (functional) binding to the orientation must be user-friendly in any position of the device.

There are no difficulties with simple interfaces. The necessary attribute autoresizingMask which describes the changes of the frame is assigned to the UIView class objects. This method is not applicable to complicated interfaces.

Smooth and pleasant autorotation of the application interface can be performed with the help of the layoutSubviews method. The detailed information about this method can be obtained at iPad Programming Guide.

Apple announced a new version of mobile operating system iPhone OS 4 almost two weeks ago. Mobile apps developers state that iPhone OS 4 has about a hundred innovations. Let us consider the most significant of them.
First, we should mention long-awaited multitasking. However, it can be used only in iPad, iPod Touch, and the third-generation iPhone 3GS. Of course, companies that specialize in iPad apps developments will appreciate this innovation. But hardware of old devices, according to Steve Jobs’ words, cannot provide this feature.

In addition, the new OS 4 have introduced several additional services: a game center, iAd and iBooks. Game Center is a social network that will unite all who like multiplayer games. The next in the list is iAd, it’s an advertising service, through which developers of free mobile software will be able to receive additional benefits displaying advertisements.

Moreover, we would like to mention such features as possibility to create folders in user menu, to set custom wallpaper as background and additional features for text formatting.

iPhone OS 4 will be available for download this summer, when the next generation iPhone is released.
