Facebook Launched App Center

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

The largest social network Facebook has announced an unusual service which can easily become one of the leading app stores. Using this service, users can download applications to their devices, including mobile ones, and software developers for iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian will be able to promote their own projects more successfully.app-center

In the near future the App Center will be available for desktop and mobile users. According to Aaron Brady, the official representative of Facebook, this service is a new place for searching social applications. Moreover, this place will also provide mobile apps developers with new possibilities for promoting their apps.

In fact, the App Center has been created exactly for promoting mobile apps used in Facebook. Thus, if any mobile development company wants to place their own project in the Center, it will have to integrate this app into Facebook. Naturally, only registered users can download applications.

On the other hand, not all applications supported by Facebook will appear in the App Center. The applications that have received low marks from users as well as those that don’t correspond with the certain quality criteria (such as a simple interface, understandable content, absence of bugs and annoying adverts) will not get in the App Center. Moreover, mobile developers will have to create a special page for their applications following certain rules.

Before placing an application into the App Center, it will pass through careful check up. The desktop and mobile versions of the App Center (for iOS and Android) will be equal because users will be able to find the necessary applications in both versions and launch them on their devices (but it will concern only the HTML 5-based applications).

In case the application required the client installation, the service will send a user to its page in the App Store or Google Play.

BlackBerry is not dead!

The Vice President of RIM on interaction with mobile apps developers, Alec Saunders, decided to make use of the social event BlackBerry DevCon Europe in Amsterdam to debunk some myths of the situation in the company. According to his words, the number of daily downloads of applications for BlackBerry from the BlackBerry App World exceeds 6 mln, which is 30% more in comparison with the situation three months ago. Thus, the activity of BlackBerry users is growing and is not decreasing.BlackBerry-App-world

Moreover, Alec Saunders denied the rumors that BlackBerry application development doesn’t bring enough profit and is unfavourable. According to one of the heads of a Canadian IT company, 13% of their developers have earned more than $100 000 on the developed products and in general BlackBerry App World brings 40% more profit than the Android Market. Alec Saunders thinks that the RIM strategy is complicated for understanding for some people but the new platform BlackBerry 10 should solve this problem.

Windows Phone Becomes More Popular Than BlackBerry For Mobile Developers

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

ccording to recent research conducted by Appcelerator and IDC, in the 4th quarter mobile apps developers consider Microsoft Windows Phone 7 to be the third popular platform. Only some months ago this place was occupied by the BlackBerry OS.

About 38% of the respondents informed about their desire to write for WP7 and only 21% – for BlackBerry smartphones. Symbian application development, WebOS and MeeGo are even less popular, only 7%, 6% and 5% correspondingly.

As usual, the rating is headed by Apple iOS and Google Android. iPhone Application Development is attractive for 91% of respondents, for iPad – 88%, for Android smartphones – 83%.The main reason for such interest to Windows Phone 7 is the agreement on cooperation between Microsoft and Nokia signed at the beginning of the year.

Social Toolkit For Mobile Apps Development

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Frengo Company has released the Open Social Mobile Toolkit for developing mobile applications working with the open social networks (MySpace, Hi5, Bebo) and Facebook. The main purpose of this toolkit is developing the apps that can be accessed via user’s mobile devices. According to Frengo, the new mobile platform supports the cooperation with all major US cellular operators as well as with largest operators of the world. The potential market for the applications based on the Open Social Mobile Toolkit technology is approximately one bln people.

Facebook and MySpace are very popular in many countries of the world, so the mobile access to journals and social networks via the usual mobile phones can be in great demand. In fact, the Open Social Mobile Toolkit is not the only toolkit for Mobile Phone Applications Development – the social networks take serious steps for organizing individual mobile access to their services. For example, MySpace announced that as a result of the cooperation with the operators Sprint and Verizon it has managed to gather more than a million Blackberry mobile users. However, the appearance of the new toolkit opens new possibilities for individual mobile apps developers that will be able to combine in their apps the access to various mobile services, including their own ones.

Choice of mobile application development platform (part 1)

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

At the beginning of one’s career, every mobile application developer faces the choice – what platform to choose? At present the number of mobile platforms can scare everybody – Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian.

To start with, you have to define the main aims of the project – the commercial software development, amateur development (open source applications)- as well as the end users.

From the point of view of monetarization (commercial development) at present the leaders are iPhone OS and Windows Mobile. The main advantage of choosing these platforms is a big number of users that get used to paying for the software. The main disadvantage is the necessity to compete with more than 500 mobile apps on any taste that have already been created. Moreover, Apple has got a tough policy on approving the requests for new applications, consequently, much time may pass before your app appears in the App Store, which makes it difficult to invest time and money into iPhone OS.

On the other side, if we look ahead, another interesting variant may be Android OS. Why? Because the database of Android OS users is growing every day. The analytics forecast that by the year 2012=2013 Android-based devices will beat iPhone and even Windows Mobile. Moreover, Google has started teaching its Android users that Android mobile application developers will produce free as well as paid applications and the geography of the countries where the payment can be carried out wilmobile-platforms-410x286l be extended.

Analytics are sure in Windows Phone success

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Gartner Company agree with their colleagues from IDC that by the end of 2015 Windows Phone will have overcome Apple iOS and BlackBerry OS in terms of popularity and will surrender to Android only. At this the sales of Symbian smartphones will have completely stopped by this time. microsoft-windows-phone-logo

At the end of 2012 the market share of Google Android will be about 49% of the general smartphone market. In other words, in 2012 every other smartphone bought will be based on Android, said Gartner.

It is expected that in 2012 about 310.09 mln smartphones will be based on Android in comparison with 179.87 mln units this year and 67.23 mln last year.

According to Roberta Cozza, the leading analyst from Gartner, first of all the increase in the Android market share in the nearest future will be mainly due to the increase of the given operating system in the segment of the device of low and medium price categories.

Now all analytics think that by the end of 2015 Symbian will have left the three leading places – the given platform will have disappeared completely. The first three leaders will be Android, Windows Phone and iOS and BlackBerry OS will be the third. The market shares of these platforms will be 48.8%, 19.5%, 17.2% and 11.1%.

Thus, mobile application developers will also have to consider this tendency and I’m sure that the number of Windows Phone applications will increase considerably as well.

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

Recently Opera Software has launched its own online store, Opera Mobile Store, the mobile application store. So far this service has been in the test mode. Simultaneously with the launch of Opera Mobile Store, another resource – Opera Publisher Portal – for mobile software developers was launched. The company decided not to choose only one platform and offers various popular games and applications for Windows Mobile, Android, BlackBerry, Java, Palm, Symbian.

opera-mini-213x186The version of the store is available from the PC as well as from mobile devices. In the first case, you will have to choose the operating system and the model of the phone where you are going to look for applications yourself and in the second case the operating system definition will be done automatically.

The store offers free and paid applications and there is also a system of application selection – according to genres, date, popularity, etc. Thus, mobile application developers should consider this store for distributing their apps.

Most expensive application

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Recently the company ASiQ (don’t confuse with ICQ) has launched the application SafeCell which is intended for the users who have their own planes with satellite communication. The application uses this communication and Bluetooth. Now you can make calls from your mobile phone during the flight.
At present the application is available for the platforms Symbian and BlackBerry and soon will be available for Android and iOS. And, which is more important, the price of this application is $12,500 (!). So far this application is the most expensive app in the world.google-android-apps-market-paid

As the mobile application developers admitted, despite the high price of this product, it is much cheaper than the equipment for providing mobile communication on board the plane which costs about $500,000. Thus, if you have a plane, now you know how to save money on mobile communication!

But, in general, mobile developers create applications for iPhones and Android much lower and the price of such apps is about 5-10 dollars.

Gingerbread is also known to support the SIP protocol which is required to the popular IP-telephoning. The release date of the Gingerbread hasn’t been announced yet but it is expected to happen in November or December 2010. Although some resources insist that Android 3.0 won’t be released before 2011, we are sure that Google won’t postpone the release of the platform as many mobile application developers have already prepared their devices for the new operating system.

At the same time the Apple platform is still the leader of the mobile traffic in the USA. As a result, most mobile application developers create their applications especially for this platform. 56% of the general volume of data transmitted via mobile Internet belongs to Apple. Android occupies the second place and BlackBerry smartphones are on the third place with 9%.

It should be noted that in the second quarter of 2010 Android overcame Apple iOS and BlackBerry became the best selling platform for smartphones in the USA. In April – June about 5 mln smartphones based on Google OS were sold in the USA, which has exceeded the figures from Canadian RIM and Apple. However, the leader of the smartphone market by the general number of mobile devices is still the Finnish Nokia.
