The specialists from the analytical company Berg Insight have come to a conclusion that by the year 2015 the number of downloaded applications for mobile devices will have reached 98 bln. According to the analysts, during the period from 2010 to 2015 the increase of downloads will increase by 56% annually. At that, the profit in this market segment can increase by 5.5 times and will become $8.8 bln.
At present, the leader of the market is Apple – most mobile applications have been developed for this platform. Berg Insight considers that till 2015 Apple will keep his leading position. Android mobile platform from Google is on the second place and in the nearest 4 years it will keep this position. By the year 2015 the third place will be taken by Windows Phone.
Nowadays mobile apps developers create not many applications for this platform – about 30,000. At the Android Market there are now about 280,000 apps and in the Apple App Store – more than 500,000 apps. Last year the turnover of the Apple App Store exceeded $1.7 bln and in the Android Market the profit was $102 mln. It counted for 83% and 1.3% from the total market correspondingly.
Berg Insight noted that the growth of application downloads will not be proportional to the growth of profit. Since the biggest part of mobile development is free, the monetization of such programs will be limited to content selling immediately in the application environment or in advertising.

At the I/O conference Google announced its new version of Android operating system. The version got the name ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’.
According to CNET News, Ice Cream Sandwich will be released in the fourth quarter of 2011. Various mobile devices including smartphones and tablets can work on this platform. The new Android version will inherit many features of the Honeycomb version intended only for tablets.
The update for Honeycomb 3.1 was also presented at the conference. It can be installed by the owners of Motorola Xoom tablets and Google TV. Among the innovations one can mention the following ones: the updated user’s interface, scalable widgets and a possibility of connecting USB peripherals including keyboards and joysticks.
The representatives of Google also informed that the number of activated Android devices in the world had exceeded a hundred million. Android based devices are produced by 35 manufacturers. According to the company, about 200,000 android applications are available at the Android Market.
The I/O conference is held by Google every year. During the conference Google carries out seminars and trainings for Android application developers as well as announce present innovations.

Google Android is popular because of its open source code: practically every developer from any mobile development company can write an application without any licensing. All the development tools are also available in the source code and free (for example, IDE Eclipse). Moreover, the off-the-shelf Android application is easy to sell as the terms of selling at the Android Market are simple and transparent: practically all applications can be sold and only those that don’t correspond to the rules are deleted. However, some mobile application developers are not satisfied with the marketing component of the Android Market.
For free Android application development there is another alternative available – advertising. At present there is a system called AdMob (which Google is going to buy) and also Google has decided to develop its own AdSense for mobile applications (mainly for Android). We can already find many applications using the new advertising system from Google.
So, that’s for you to decide. But we have made our mine — Android.

Android developers have established their own trade union and have stated seven requirements to Google concerning the terms and conditions of cooperating with Android Market.
What do developers want?
- Abolish a 32% tax on applications
- Fix the viewing options: now Android Market can be viewed only in two ways: Most Recent and Top Selling.
- Open bag tracking
- Increase possible ways of payment
- Introduce the clear rules and the description of the appellation process concerning the deletion of the application
- Direct contact with the team of developers of the Android Market
- Transparency of algorithms (since the open source codes of the Market are closed, sometimes it isn’t clear how the search functions have to work, why the application doesn’t always get into the list “Most Recent” and how the list “Featured Apps” is made).
According to the trade union leaders, the execution of these demands will considerably improve the working conditions of mobile application developers as well as restore the ecosystem and provide better conditions for users.
“If the proposed conditions are not satisfied, we’ll move our applications to the alternative platforms and will use other open platforms instead of Android Market. Moreover, we’ll talk other Android developers out of creating Android products and will constantly work on destroying any statements from Google about the openness of this platform”, reported the statement.

Google has launched a web version of its online apps store – Android Market. Now the new service is available at the address market.android.com. There every user can download free or paid mobile applications. But in order to choose and use the resource, you will need to have an account in Google. After choosing the application, you’ll have to select your model of the smartphone or phone where you’d like to install the application.
Of course, the new service is designed well and has a selection according to categories and genres of the offered content. Mobile application developers have got a chance to sell their content inside their applications. The possibility to convert the price of applications into various currencies is an exciting feature as well.
Google confirmed the information that the distribution of paid applications will start in the nearest future via the Android Market service. It means the Android Market will get many new mobile applications which will be characterized not only by high quality but the price as well. As some experts think, the given development of the service will place the Android Market on the same level as the famous App Store from Apple.

The operation system Google Android, which was born only a few years ago, has caught up with the world’s leader – Symbian OS, supported by the Finnish corporation Nokia.
According to the quarterly data as of the end of summer, the volume of sales of Android based smartphones was far behind the volume of Symbian sales but was already ahead of Apple iPhone and RIM for BlackBerry.
Since the middle till the end of summer, the volume of Android based smartphones sales from NTC, Motorola and Samsung Electronics on the average was 218,000 devices a day. Nokia could boast of 325,000 smartphones sold daily.
According to some experts, Symbian can keep its dominating position thanks to the new portfolio and the statement on a completely new approach to the mobile interface.
However, Android is a free platform that is available for any manufacturer of mobile phones. Its population is growing from day to day. Mobile application developers feel this tendency and work hard to produce more and more Android apps to the Android Market.

The device is only a working prototype. The real commercial Chrome OS devices will appear on sale only in the first quarter of 2011. The new device has a 12.1-inch screen and in the presented version it is intended for working at the American market, the mobile operator Verizon Wireless being the WiFi/3G internet provider for this phone. 
The executive director Erick Schmidt said that the given device is not for sale but the company is ready to provide it for testing to various business users.
Google says that the presented model is the quickest netbook: it needs only 3 seconds to download the main parts of the system, and the full download will take 7 seconds. At present even Apple Mac OS can’t boast of such figures.
Schmidt also admitted that the basis of the new system is the Chrome browser and the nucleus Linux. He also said that the number of Google Chrome users has reached 120 mln people.
The company has also announced the opening of the online store for web application developers and users – Chrome Web Store. The store will allow users find, install and buy web applications similar to those that Google offers on its other paid platforms. By its structure and functions, Chrome Web Store will be similar to the Android Market or the Apple App Store. Thus software development companies will have one more chance to sell their applications online.

The Internet store Google Android Market where users can download for free or buy applications for their Android smartphones steadily expands the volume of available soft, however, the company is facing tough critics from the side of users and mobile application developers because the paid options of the Android Market are limited.
The analytics say that in comparison with the App Store, in the Android Market only some percent of applications are paid and it scares serious mobile application development companies and developers who got used to getting financial reward from their software. The main problem in realizing the commercial strategy in the Android Market is the fact that only 13 countries can get paid applications from the store: USA, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland.
The company promises to expand the geography of paid applications availability but the details are not announced. The reliable sources from Google inform that by the end of the year paid applications at the Android Market will work at the other 46 markets.

According to the AndroLib site, the users of the online apps store Android Market have downloaded from the store various applications more than a billion times. The counter situated on the site shows that every single moment about one hundred applications are downloaded from the catalogue.
Now more than 93,000 apps for Android are on the Android Market servers. Till the end of the year the number of applications for the mobile platform from Google in the Android Market will exceed 100,000 items. Only in June the range of products in the Android Market increased by 15,000 positions and following the results of July this figure reached 20,000 apps.
Android apps developers from 9 countries intensively add products to the store and according to the present day tendency mobile phone applications development will only grow.

Android’s market share of free applications stands out against the competitors’ one: about 57% of applications at the Android Market can be obtained for free. At the App Store the number of such applications is 28%, at the BlackBerry Apps World – 26%. But the users of Windows Mobile devices have to pay more often than others – only 22% of available applications at the Windows Marketplace are free.
According to the research done by Distimo, more than 50% of applications in any existing store cost no more than $2. Besides, the biggest part of applications at the App Store is less than $1. It may be one of the reasons for such stunning sales, according to Apple; so far applications have been downloaded more than 5 bln times.
The big part of free soft at the Android Market is a positive moment for the users of smartphones based on the open platform. However, from the point of view of monetization, placing applications at the App Store is more profitable for mobile apps developers. The additional benefit is the Apple iAd platform which allows Apple apps developers to place advertising modules into their products and earn additionally at demonstration.
