Apple lost its main iPhone and iPod developer

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

papermasterSenior Vice-President and Head of the Devices Hardware Engineering Department of Apple, Mark Papermaster, left the company, reported the New York Times.

Mr Papermaster came to Apple from IBM in 2008. In the new place he was responsible for iPod and iPhone development.

According to some observers, the reason of Mr Papermaster’s resign was the notorious problem with the iPhone 4 antenna, which made Apple start giving away free cases for this smartphone.

The former Vice-President didn’t comment his resign. The speaker from Apple, Steve Dowling, confirmed Mark Papermaster’s resign having mentioned that his duties passed to Bob Mansfield, Senior Vice-President and Head of the Mac Hardware Engineering Department.

By the way, Mr Papermaster didn’t take part in the conference dedicated to the ‘case distribution’. Steve Jobs, Bob Mansfield and the main operation director Tim Cook carry his can.

By the way, iPhone application development is probably the most rapidly developing trend in the sphere of mobile application development at present. So any change in the management may influence it.

United Arab Emirates switches off Blackberry services

Monday, August 9th, 2010

On October 11, 2010 the UAE authorities will suspend the usage of some services in Blackberry phones. This decision was taken in the context of national security, informs Reuters. The thing is that the government can’t control the information transferred via these devices as the UAE doesn’t have the corresponding code.

This action is expected to touch about 500,000 users. The limitation will be valid till Blackberry doesn’t work out ‘the good-enough solution’, admitted the General Director of the Telecommunication Department Mohammed Al-Ghanim. According to the official, only Blackberry services will be put under a ban. Al-Ghanim says smartphones Nokia and iPhone won’t be touched by this limitation so iphone application developers can relax.

The negotiations between the Department and the manufacturer of smartphones Research In Motion have been carried since 2007. The UAE authorities inform that the compromise in using Blackberry Messenger, e-mail 2and Internet access services hasn’t been reached.

Earlier the dissatisfaction of data coding in Blackberry Messenger has been expressed in other countries as well. Thus, last week the government of India informed that such data could be used for conducting acts of terrorism. Despite this news, BlackBerry apps developers continue creating products for this device which is considered the most popular one in the market at present.

Android 2.2 is coming. What’s new for apps developers?

Monday, April 26th, 2010

android-froyoThe most smartphones have not even updated their OS to the Android 2.1 version, but it does not prevent Google from developing and debugging of the next version of its platform. So, mobile apps developers for Android will meet Froyo (it’s a code name of the 2.2 version). According to rumors, Nexus One will get this renewed OS very soon. The release has not yet announced, so there is no precise information about the updates. But here are some assumptions about future features of Android 2.2:
• JIT compiler,
• additional free RAM,
• OpenGL ES 2.0,
• Flash 10.1 support,
• corrected problem with the “crazy screen” (multitouch),
• activation of the color trackball,
• FM-radio.

Information about the JIT compiler can be considered as a confirmed fact, we can only wait for the details from Google, which has already provided a compiler for Android application developers to test their programs.
More additional free RAM will be available thanks to new kernels that Linux uses in Froyo. It was done in CyanogenMod previously, and it gives grounds to assume that such a feature will be used in Froyo.
We sure that you have already read about OpenGL in Android. So Android mobile application developers is still waiting for the full access to the OpenGL ES 2.0 libraries.

When can we expect the new version of Android? So, we hope that Google I/O 2010 will uncover this secret.

Prototyping is the first step to do developing iPhone apps

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Books, experts and experienced mobile development companies recommend to start any software product with creation of a prototype. Why is it so important to develop user interface beforehand? It’s obvious! Program interface is the first thing that users see starting their work.

And especially this approach applies to iPhone apps development. The success of a new application to large extent will depend on whether users like the interface or not. A good prototype identifies the main problems on the very first stage of mobile development. Programmers have not written their code yet, so any changes can be made without any difficulties. Without prototyping problems may occur on the later stages, when most of program code has already been written and it is much more difficult to change something. This risk is too high, so iphone application developers cannot do without a UI prototypes.

There are many ways of prototyping. Some developers still use paper prototyping, drawing new interfaces with pen on paper (so do we at EleganceIT). Others use such programs as Microsoft Visio, Photoshop or special software for UI design (e.g. we use them on the next stages).

Paper prototyping is the fastest method. Some companies even want to make it faster, offering products for those who like to make prototypes of new iPhone applications on paper:
