How to make users to read your web pages till the end

Friday, October 30th, 2009

We all have heard a popular rule of the first screen: “User does not scroll a web page, that is why all your information should be on the top of it”. This rule is based on the fact that users do not use the scroll bar because they feel too lazy to do it. Guys from the CXpartners company (United Kingdom, Bristol) decided to conduct a research to clear up this question. So the Elegance IT company, which specialists are developing new web sites as offshore dedicated team, presents surprising results of this research:

Truly speaking web development professionals know that the rule of the first screen is a myth. :) Over the past 3 years, we have carried out about 800 user tests and only in three cases a lower window boundary has become a real obstacle for users.

Actually this rule came from newspapers: the most important materials are always located at the upper half of the first page. In the Internet it is used to describe a page that users see without scroll.

Why are we are not worry about the rule of the first screen?

Customers don’t care have a web page scroll bar or not, they think it can’t spoil good website design, and we have made sure of it. Users felt more than comfortable scrolling long, very long pages to find what they need. So you can find a lot of successful websites, which creators really don’t worry about the rule of the first screen:

1

Adding evidences

An eye tracker was used for the research; it allows you to see what user sees. As a result we have created temperature maps.

Scrollbars

Analyzing results, we saw a clear spot in the right corner of the map. It was a scroll bar, this means that it is used to estimate the length of the particular page.  Some content at the end of the page provides a stimulus for further reading.

The image below shows two versions of Bristol airport web pages: at the first one the information is divided into two columns, while the second template has an illustration as the main element. As a result, people have used scroll:

2

“Stop sign” for your eyes

Take as an example the First Choice company site, its web page was very long and users didn’t want to read it till the end.

A new title with photos changed the situation:

Tips for successful website design:

•    large amount of space between elements facilitates eye movements;

•    horizontal lines stop your readers and prevent further page viewing, so all the elements should be above the lower limit;

•    avoid scrollbars inside web pages.

Mobile apps with the maximum of functionality – new approach to mobile software development

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Modern interfaces designed for mobile phones lacks integrity. Specialists form the EleganceIT company decided to reconsider existing approach to mobile soft development and invented some new features. They just took a sheet of paper and drew a table, including all the most popular mobile functions in horizontal and vertical lines, one by one. So cell at their intersections showed the possible way of integration:

1. Calendar + Phonebook = birthday reminder

2. Photo + Phonebook = to mark in the photo your friends from phonebook

3. Calendar + Photos = sort photos according to dates and events from your calendar

4. Photo + GPS = locate photos, taken by phone user

5. GPS + Phonebook = to mark addresses (home, work, etc.) assigned to people from your phonebook

6. SMS + Phonebook = to show SMS messages as a chat with particular contact (as it was done in Gmail)

7. GPS + Call log = to show where the call took a place (It is doubtful, but it may be helpful for those who need an alibi :) )

8. Notes + Phonebook = mobile CRM, to leave any notes about people from your phonebook (their wishes, debt, etc.)

9. Contact + Alarms = call reminder, appointment reminder, etc.

10. Alarms + GPS = to call back to particular person when the phone is at an appointed place

11. Internet + Phonebook = friendfeeds, rss from their web pages

12. Internet + Music = something like last.fm

13. Bluetooth + Phonebook = associate contact and bluetooth address, keep a transmissions history (or even better keep one chat with sms, call logs, rss, etc.)

14. SMS + GPS = send SMS on arrival an appointed place (Mom: Son, send me sms on arrival – it will be so easy then :) )

EleganceIT believe that users definitely appreciate such features, so mobile development companies should work in this direction.

Android outruns iPhone OS and Windows Mobile in 2012

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Gartner analysts consulted their crystal ball and found that Android will be the second most popular mobile platform in the world in the year 2012. The company will present its full report with forecasts for smartphone market only at the end of October, but Ken Dulaney from Gartner has already shared some basic information with ComputerWorld reporters.

Google Android’s popularity is growing wildly. According to the analysts, it is caused by many different factors. One of the key factors is a number of additional functions and related mobile applications from Google.

Also Android as a platform has advantages over other operating systems. For example, Android is an Open Source project in contrast to iPhone OS.

In addition, smartphone interfaces usually differ from each other by two approaches: iPhone OS is based on applications, devices using Windows Mobile and Symbian are based on communicational functions. Android, according to Dulaney, wisely combines both approaches. In particular, its interface allows running high-usage tasks without having to return to the main menu.

Finally, although the first AndroPhone appeared only a year ago and did not gain big popularity (it had serious hardware limitations), in recent months the major mobile phone manufacturers have introduced several new smartphones based on Android. Moreover about 40 new Android models will appear in the next year, said Dulaney, as well as a new OS version (its code-name is Donut).

Gartner experts managed to write all these factors in mathematical expressions and get a new model of mobile market in 2012. There are their projections:

1. Symbian OS – 203 million devices, 39%
2. Android – 76 million devices, 14.5%
3. iPhone – 71.5 million devices, 13.7%
4. Windows Mobile – 66.8 million devices, 12.8%
5. BlackBerry – 65.25 million devices, 12.5%
6. Linux – 28 million devices, 5.4%
7. Palm (webOS) – 11 million devices, 2.1%

7 wishful functions for perfect iPhones and smartphones

Monday, October 5th, 2009

We continue reviewing of the list of functions for ideal iPhones and smartphones (new desired features and ideas for mobile application developers):eye-phone

Wish # 3: To use smartphone as a USB hub to transfer multimedia information. For example, to save pictures from your camera or flash drives and also to use it as a media server while you connected to the Wi-Fi Internet (this possibility has been already implemented in some devices).

Wish # 4: To connect smartphone to TV to playback HD video.

Wish # 5: Again, books insonation. We must admit that it’s much easier to listen to the text than to read it.

Wish # 6 (it was demonstrated in popular concepts): A projected on any surface full-sized keyboard.

Wish # 7: А projector for presentations or just for surfing on a big screen.

Wish # 8: Large amounts of memory. We know that some iPhones have 32 Gb, and Apple is going to produce 60 Gb models… But we also know how much memory needed for some maniacs …. at least 120-160 Gb!

Wish # 9: Wireless connection to home audio system to use smartphone as a media source.

Wish # 10 (it’s the sheer audacity, but we may dream): We believe that some day smartphone makers and developers will add DECT support in their devices. We mean intelligent forwarding of calls (mobile via the mobile network, city calls through the city network and so on). Nowadays Google Voice has similar option.
